One night in Malmo

We really enjoyed our extra day in Helsingor - if you accept the inevitable tourism, it is a delightful place.

This morning we motored east across the TSS (Traffic Separation Scheme - watery motorway) dodging tankers and ferries then turned south back down the other side of the Sound for Malmo. The wind was indeed in the west but died away so again a little sailing and more motoring. This was a 6 hour passage and as usual the off-watch person got much reading done, as well as eating, dozing, and researching the next marina to figure out the optimal position to look for an available berth (ie not a half-mile trudge to the facilities!)

After some debate about chancing the city centre harbour we remembered it is the Malmo Festival this week, so caution prevailed and we are in the Limhamn South marina, 3miles from the city centre - another huge one, and we had no trouble finding a guest berth. The Swedes'  holidays finish next w/e but with the Danes back to school and the Germans heading home, marinas are perhaps getting quieter.

After settling the boat (adjusting lines, switching things off) we found a bus that took us into the centre (thank you GoogleMaps). We have no Swedish Kronor but luckily the bus takes credit cards! We alighted in the old town and had a good mooch around. The crowds and the noise were tremendous, due to the Festival. Malmo has a real mix of very beautiful old buildings and rather block-like new ones, cheek by jowl. We stumbled across the pharmacy that has been operating on the same site since 1571.

We had thought of dining on street food, of which vast varieties were on offer. But the crowds were quite oppressive. Then down a side street we spotted a restaurant called Bastard that specialises in pig. Seemed like a good idea, and it really was. The food was sublime - cold cuts with sauces, salty bread, sweet corn on the cob, sweet cheeses, accompanied by local beer then a chocolate old fashioned cocktail for N, fizz followed by a Pedro Ximenez dessert sherry for L. Yes, okay, but this is our one night in Sweden, let alone Malmo.
